Step 1
ALPHABET FIRST
The first thing you will need to do to encourage your child to read is to teach them their alphabet. Teaching your child the sounds of each letter is the first step towards phonemic awareness, and can be turned into a fun game. There are many teaching activities that you can do using the alphabet sounds, such as showing pictures and animals while making the alphabet sounds. -
Step 2
PHONEMIC AWARENESS
Learning phonics sounds is the next step you will need to do to teach your child to read. Purchase some phonics flashcards, or make them yourself. They should have a good mix of vowel sounds and consonant blends. Once your child masters the blends, they can easily transition into early readers. Teaching your toddler to read, and teaching your child to read, is easy when you follow this system. Learning phonemic awareness is a fast start for early readers. -
Step 3
EASY READERS
Your child can learn to read easy readers when they have mastered the basic phonemic blends using their flashcards. There are many early reading books out there that increase in complexity, such as Bob Books. The first few books are basic words, such as cat, sat, mat, and the books increase in difficulty from there. You can find books for early readers at your local library or bookstore in the children's section. Just look for the easy reader book stand. You can even find printable early readers online at educational websites and websites for homeschoolers. Early emergent readers will love the feeling of being able to master these early reading books.
