How to Do a Five Person Weave Basketball Warmup

The five-person weave is a great warmup for those teams that have mastered the three-person weave and want to add some variety to their practice warmup routine. As with all warmup drills, this should be done at about half-speed, as it is intended to warm the body up and get player communication flowing. The following steps will help you to warm up with the five-person weave.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • At least 5 basketball players
  • A basketball for every 5 players
  • Basketball court
  1. Step 1

Form five lines behind the baseline. Line 1 should be directly behind the basket and have a basketball. Four more lines should be formed:
Line 2--10 feet to the right of Line 1
Line 3--20 feet to the right of Line 1
Line 4--10 feet to the left of Line 1
Line 5--20 feet to the left of Line 1

  2. Step 2

The first players in each line will start the drill.

  3. Step 3

The drill begins with the players proceeding up the court and a chest pass is thrown from Line 1 to Line 2 (the pass receiver should always be calling for the ball). After making the pass, the player from Line 1 runs behind the player in Line 3.

  4. Step 4

The receiver of the pass then makes a chest pass to the player in Line 4 and proceeds around the player in Line 5.

  5. Step 5

The receiver of this pass makes a chest pass to the player to his/her immediate right and then proceeds around the farthest player to the right.

  6. Step 6

This process continues up the court with a chest pass alternating to the player on the immediate left and the immediate right. After each pass, the passer is running around the widest player on the side they passed to--if you pass to the right, you move to the right.

  7. Step 7

When the players reach the other end of the court, the last pass should be a bounce pass to the player cutting towards the basket for a lay-up. If the lay-up is missed, the group of five should rebound and put it in the basket.

  8. Step 8

If you have multiple groups of five players--once the first group reaches half-court, the next group should go.

  9. Step 9

When every group has completed the chest pass five-person weave, proceed to a bounce pass weave.

  10. Step 10

The drill is complete with an overhead pass weave.

Tips & Warnings
  • There should be no dribbling or traveling in this drill.
  • On all three weaves (chest, bounce, overhead), the last pass should be a bounce pass for a lay-up.
  • This is designed as a more advanced drill--younger players should focus on the three-person weave.
