It can be quite challenging to lose weight after pregnancy, but below are some tips and strategies to help you facilitate the process.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A desire to lose weight after pregnancy and the willingness to follow the necessary steps, along with a sense of compassion for yourself as you do.
  1. Step 1

To lose weight after pregnancy, consider breastfeeding your baby. It is good for both of you. The benefits for you include: increased production of prolactin, a calming hormone, faster shrinkage of your uterus (which was stretched out carrying the baby), the burning of several hundreds of calories per day, and a wonderful way to bond with your baby. And the benefits for your baby include: numerous nutritional benefits (since breast milk is nature’s ideal source of nutrition for infants), a wonderful way to bond with you and develop a healthy sense of attachment to you, and several other benefits.

  2. Step 2

Doctors typically advise waiting six weeks or so to resume your regular exercise routine because you want your body to heal completely from giving birth. (When you do resume, take it easy for the first few sessions to make sure you are feeling up to it.)

  3. Step 3

Another way to lose weight after pregnancy is to eat healthfully (lots of veggies, fruit and whole grains). Fiber is particularly important, as it makes you feel fuller, keeps you “regular,” and can help you lose weight after pregnancy.

  4. Step 4

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, which helps you flush toxins, and which can also boost your weight loss efforts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take it easy on yourself. People gain pregnancy weight over the course of nine months and it can take just as long if not longer to lose weight after pregnancy. It’s not healthy to lose the pregnancy weight too quickly, and if you experience occasional setbacks in your post partum weight loss goals, know that this is okay, and that you will be able to get back on track. Too many women are too hard on themselves, especially when it comes to losing weight (not just following a pregnancy, but at any time). Make up your mind to be gentle and compassionate with yourself now and always.
