Instructions

Exfoliate using a foot file. These range from flimsy emory board-type files to high-quality foot files used in salons. Use your foot file when your feet are completely dry. Use a back and forth filing motion, rubbing the dry, cracked areas. Do this over a towel, because you'll get a lot of dead skin powder coming off your feet.

Instead of a foot file, use a Ped Egg. A Ped Egg is similar to a foot file, and is designed so that all the dead skin is caught inside until you're ready to throw it away. There's instructions on how to properly use a Ped Egg in the Resources section below.

Use a pumice stone. Natural pumice stones are an excellent way to exfoliate and treat dry cracked heels. Unlike the foot file or Ped Egg, a pumice stone must be used when the feet are wet. Leave your pumice stone in your shower and use it at the end of your shower, when the skin on your feet is completely saturated.

Use a thick moisturizer. Use solid cocoa butter or a thick, emollient body butter type moisturizer. It's best to apply when the skin is slightly damp, such as after you've dried your feet after a shower. Moisturizers help retain moisture in the skin, so having the skin a little damp will allow the moisturizer to retain that moisture. Apply liberally, and cover the feet with cotton socks. Leave for several hours (over night is best).
