Put on Classical Guitar Strings
Put on Classical Guitar Strings

In this article I will show you how to properly put on classical guitar strings.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Classical Guitar
  • Classical Guitar Strings
  1. Step 1

Get the string right. The strings in the box will be numbered and the biggest number means that it is the top string. To define top that is when you hold the guitar in the position that you play it then it will be closes to the top. Then your guitar will have holes to pull these strings through at the bottom of the guitar on the bridge or it will have little pins that push down into a hole. If so push the string down in the hole and pull up so that the round thing on the end of the string is flush against the bottom of the pin. Put the string through and turn the tuning knob on the headstock so that the hole that your going to stick the string through is parallel with the ground.

  2. Step 2

Give it slack. Pull the string through with your left hand as far as you can. Then with your right hand grab the string where the hole is and pull up until you get about a foot of slack.

  3. Step 3

Tighten it up. Hold the string where you still have slack on the bottom part that stretches from the bridge to the headstock. Start tightening it up and if you are doing the last three strings, which are the top three, then you should tighten them upwards towards the head of the guitar. If it is the first three strings, the bottom three, then you will tighten them downward toward the bridge.

  4. Step 4

This step is very IMPORTANT! You need to guide the string so that when you tighten it each time you come to the hole which the string goes into from the bridge of the guitar you need to switch which side the excess part of the string is on. Go from left to right so that the string will wrap over itself in an X fashion making it hold tighter.

  5. Step 5

Tune the string. Tune it to the correct tuning. Standard tuning is EADGBE and that's from 6th to 1st string, top to bottom, left to right if your looking at the guitar standing up and from the front. The string will have to have to time to stretch so it may not be in tune everyday for the first week or so.

  6. Step 6

Repeat for all strings. Repeat these steps for all the string but when you do the first three strings, the bottom ones, then you need to tighten them downward towards the body of the guitar, which is where the hole and bridge are. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SLACK! If you don't have slack then there wont be enough string to tighten around the tuning knob and it will constantly slip and won't work or could make it impossible to keep your guitar in tune.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you have slack.
  • If you can buy a knob-winding tool it will make things much faster.
  • Don't rush on getting the string tuned. If it feels like it might break just let it stretch and tune other strings and just come back to it later.
