    For a dry cough, try ivy leaf syrup. Research suggests it helped stopped bronchitis in 92% of patients. Ivy leaf contains compounds that fight inflammation and bronchial spasms. Take 2 teaspoons twice a day. You can buy ivy leaf syrup online.

  2. Step 2
     

    Got a wet cough? Thyme has been proven to loosen phlegm easing congestion. Its most active ingredient is thymol, which is an antimicrobial that kills the virus or the bacteria that is causing your cough. To make thyme tea steep one teaspoon dried herbs in a cup of boiling water covered for twenty minutes. Drink three times a day. Make sure the thyme herbs you use are fragrant and green.

    For most coughs, use honey and lemon to cure a cough. Fill a pan with water. Add a medium-sized lemon. Boil for ten to fifteen minutes. Extract the juice from the lemon. Filter the juice. Add the juice to a half cup of honey. Take one tablespoon three times a day.

    In case studies nine out of ten people who took elderberry extract within 48 hours from the onset of flu symptoms were free from coughing. Elderberry extract has antioxidants that stimulate the immune system. It also has anthocyanins, which are known to reduce inflammation in airways. Take two teaspoons four times a day.

    For a smoker's cough boil three cups of water with three tablespoons of whole flaxseed. Squeeze juice from three lemons. Filter the juice and pour into pan. Steep for three hours. Sweeten with honey. Take one tablespoon for smoker's cough.
