Things You'll Need:
- Crate
- leash
- collar
-
Step 1
The dog should never be out of his crate unsupervised. Anytime you need to leave or at night while you are asleep the dog should be placed in the crate.
-
Step 2
When you return home or wake up in the morning immediately take the dog outside to his "potty spot." You need to identify a spot you want the dog to go and always go there first when you go outside.
-
Step 3
When you return inside keep the dog on the leash and in your sight. The dog can continue to run around and play in the same room as you, but still on the leash. If you see the dog sniffing or squatting immediately grab the leash and take him outside. This way most accidents can be prevented by a quick reaction.
-
Step 4
If the dog does have an accident and you catch him in the act say "No" firmly to provide a distraction and then take him outside to his potty spot.
-
Step 5
Once your dog has gone several days without an accident you can try taking the leash off, but still have him within your sight when he is out of the crate. Once he has gone 6 weeks without an accident he can be considered house broken or potty trained.
