Online social networking sites are here to stay and it’s only a matter of time before your child tries to experiment with them.

There are a number of free and fun educational websites offering blogs, groups, kids’ own web page, games, stories and music. Many of these websites are age appropriate and safe from inappropriate context. This article focuses on finding online communities for the Tween (8-12) age group.

Find websites for your Tween children that are safe. This age group is very easily influenced and safety should be paramount. Find Tween online communities that are free from prying advertisements and free from risky links. Some of the sites may have age appropriate advertisements. Go into the websites and see what their blogs, online games, stories and groups are all about.

Look for the websites of children's tv stations, such as nickelodeon. Nick.com/nbb is home to the naked brothers band, this is a very popular music band with kids, and they are not naked.

  2. Step 2

Find websites for Tween kids that are fun, but also educational and that engage them intellectually. Websites that have interactive online games make the learning process fun. Look for the sites that are math, reading or science oriented.

Fat Brain is a Tween website that has a math arcade and stories that inspire kids to read. Miss O and Friends is a Tween site for girls and it has games and reading material very appropriate for girls in this age group.

  3. Step 3

These are more of the online communities for boys and girls in the Tween age group: Beacon Street Girls.com, Girlsense.com, Stardoll.com, Imbee.com. Always monitor your children when online. The monitoring should be even greater when the sites have outside links and advertisements.
