Create a Pin up Make up Look

I love the styles of the 40's and 50's and long for the days of glamor and femininity. Creating a retro make up look is not difficult although the eyeliner takes some practice!

I know it looks like you need a lot of items for this look but most ladies probably already own a lot of them if not all!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Foundation to match your skin tone (pancake make up works best)
  • Concealer
  • A vanilla colored eyeshadow
  • A taupe eyeshadow
  • Black liquid or gel liner
  • A tapered eye liner brush if using gel liner
  • An eyelash curler
  • Black Mascara
  • Faux lashes (optional)
  • Eyebrow powder or pencil
  • Eyebrow brush
  • Red Lipstick & Liner
  • A rosy or coral blush
  • Translucent powder
  1. Step 1

Remove any old eye make up, cleanse your skin and dry well. Moisturize and allow it to soak in and dry.

  2. Step 2

Now that you have a clean palette its time to apply some concealer to under eye circles, any blemishes and around your nose if you have redness there.

  3. Step 3

Next apply your foundation all over your face and blend down the neck. Pancake make up will give you the most coverage and give you that perfect skin look that was so coveted in the fifties. Max factor makes a good pancake make up. You can also use liquid foundation or a mineral powder foundation (this is what I use) but you won't get the same effect as you would with pancake make up. Make sure foundation is well blended into your hairline and neck and use more concealer if you need to. Use a translucent powder to set your foundation. (I also like to put the foundation over my lips to help me later with the shape)

  4. Step 4

Now apply your blush lightly to the apples of your cheeks, you want a hint of a blush not clown cheeks.

  5. Step 5

Apply the vanilla eyeshadow over the entire lid with a wide brush if you have one or whatever you have handy, concentrate a little bit more of the color under the arch of your eyebrow.

  6. Step 6

Next take a smaller brush (or again whatever you have handy) and apply the darker eyeshadow to the crease of your eye, from the middle to the outer edge of your eye. Blend so you don't have a harsh line.

  7. Step 7

This next step is my little cheat step which helps me enormously with my cat eyes. I take a regular black liner pencil and lightly line my eye into the classic cat shape. (extending the line past the edge of the eye and slightly up. Next take your liquid liner or your gel liner and brush (this is what I find easiest to use) and trace that line. Take a step back and look in the mirror and adjust the thickness if you need to. Even with my cheat tip it can take some practice to get it right.

  8. Step 8

While your liner is drying take your eyebrow brush and groom your brows. Now take your brown pencil or powder and lightly fill in your natural brows. Don't try to give yourself a new brow shape, just fill in where your brows are sparse.

  9. Step 9

Take your eyelash curler and curl your lashes. If you want some extra hold give the curler a blast of hot air from your blow dryer, make sure it isn't scalding hot and then curl your lashes. Apply mascara , concentrate on the outer lashes. Apply faux lashes if you have them.

  10. Step 10

Now its time for the lips. I use a combination of two red lipsticks because I can't find the shade I want in one red. A lot of people line their lips before applying lipstick but I like to apply the lipstick and then line to help with the shape and to give it that clean edge. If you have pointy lips like I do try to round them out a bit. Perfect bow lips were all the rage.

Okay, take a step back and check out your inner pin up girl, you're gorgeous!

Tips & Warnings
  • Shaping your brows is really important for this look. A defined arch was popular in the 40's and 50's. Look up some good brow tweezing articles if you haven't plucked yours yet.
