The first step in removing your old grout is to ensure you are protecting your tub and shower bases. Use painters tape to secure a tarp or plastic sheet along the base of your tile wall. Drape it across the tub so that it catches any debris and prevent any buildup of dust or dirt in the drain.

Using a saw or tool attachment will speed up your grout removal process but will leave you susceptible to tile damage if you move too fast. There are several drill attachments available on the market but the most important thing to consider is the blade material. Grout is tough stuff that needs a tough blade, and carbide is the material of choice.

To remove grout with your handheld saw and grout removal attachment simply place the blade on your line of grout. Use light pressure at first creating a valley in the center of your grout line. As you find your valley and have a rhythm slowly increase the pressure to create a depth of approximately 1/8th inch.

Getting too close to the edges with your power saw and attachment can cause damage to neighboring tiles so once you've got your valley of removed grout put the power tool down. Use a razor blade or specialize grout removal tool to chip out the remaining grout at the edges along the tiles. With the center removed the grout should chip out fairly easily.

Once you have all of the visible grout removed take a wire brush and scrub the grout line firmly. This will get the smaller chunks and dusty grout pieces out of your lines. Be sure to wear a mask at this point to avoid inhalation of grout particles. To keep dust to a minimum try running a vacuum along with your brush strokes.
