Slugs and snails are commonly found in gardens, and are generally considered a pest. Deterring snails and slugs from eating the bounty of your garden is actually quite simple, and can be done without chemicals. Here's how to keep snails and slugs out of your garden.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To deter slugs and snails from your garden, stop throwing away your egg shells! Keep a container handy, wash your egg shells after use and let dry, and collect egg shells throughout the year. Snails and slugs will not like to crawl across broken up egg shells to get to your plants, so gather as many egg shells as possible.

  2. Step 2

In the spring, crush your egg shells and encircle each of your plants with the broken shells. You want to leave enough broken shells to deter snails and slugs from crawling across. This will not harm your plants in any way.

  3. Step 3

Monitor your egg circles throughout the growing season, adding more if necessary to deter snails and slugs. As some vegetables and fruits grow, you may find them on the ground outside the circle, simply extend the circle of shells so snails and slugs cannot get to them.

on 1/15/2009 What a great idea to keep slugs and snails out of the garden. I remember my grandmother using salt, too, when I was little. This seems much more humane.
