How to Know Where to Install Smoke Detectors
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, "Smoke alarms are one of the best safety devices you can buy and install to protect yourself, your family, and your home." Fires break out in homes for numerous reasons, and these safety devices give early warning to occupants and provide the time needed to escape. Install at least one smoke detector on each level of the home, including the basement level.

Install smoke detectors inside each bedroom or any other rooms where people sleep in the house with the door closed. Install an alarm outside every sleeping area also.

If you are mounting a smoke detector on a wall, position it from 4 to 12 inches below the ceiling.

If a smoke detector is mounted on the ceiling, it should be in the center of the ceiling or at least 4 inches away from any side walls.

For a room with an angled or cathedral-style ceiling, mount a smoke detector within 3 feet of the highest point of the ceiling.

Tips & Warnings
Read the instruction manual provided with each smoke detector completely before installing the device.
Test smoke detectors monthly and replace batteries yearly.
Hire a certified electrician to install wired or interconnected smoke detectors.
Don't install smoke alarms near windows, doors, or ducts where drafts might interfere with their operation.
Never paint smoke alarms. Paint, stickers, or other decorations could keep the alarms from working.
