Things You'll Need:
- Patience
-
Step 1
Depending on the maturity of the child you might not need to use every step. This same process can be used with anyone not just children. An adult may only need reminding of how they are behaving to understand what they need to do to become more appropriate.
Describe the behavior that you want to change or stop. "Jimmy you didn't take out the trash like you said you would." -
Step 2
Explain why it's important that the behavior change. "The trash needs to be taken out or else it doesn't get picked up and starts to smell. Everyone in the house pitches in and does something and this is your job."
-
Step 3
Specify what you need the child to do. "I need you take out the trash right now and again every week."
-
Step 4
Define the consequences for their failure to comply. "If you don't take the trash out you're not going to be able to watch TV."

on 1/14/2009 This works for me! I raise my voice in case of fire and dire emergencies, and I mean what I say, and say what I mean.
Good one!

on 1/14/2009 Good article on disciplining your child. So many parents fly off the handle and just make the situation worse. Welcome to eHow!

on 1/14/2009 I don't have kids yet but these sound like some great ideas. I think staying calm is very important, I think it's easier to respect a calm role model. 5*
