Stop Your Dog From Begging And Jumping Up

Curious on how to stop your dog from begging, or how to prevent it from ever happening? I know how annoying it can be to have a dog that contantly begs for food, or even begs when there is no food! This article contains the tips and advice you need to break your dog of its nasty begging habits.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Cage
  1. Step 1

Be sure to start this method early in the dog's development, stopping a dog from begging after they have been begging for a long time already is very difficult.

  2. Step 2

Before every meal put the dog in a cage where they can still see what is going on. Although you may have food left over after the meal it is important not to give it to the dog, even if you put it in their food bowl while they are still in the cage it is teaching the dog to crave human food. When the meal is over and all of the food is out of view (thrown away or put in the refrigerator) let the dog out of the cage.

  3. Step 3

Continue step 2 for about 2-3 weeks. By week four you should be able to point at the cage and with a strong firm voice command them to go lay down in it. Leave the cage door open as your family eats their meals, if the dog tries to leave the cage either command them to go back in or put them back in yourself.

  4. Step 4

Once the dog willingly stays in its cage even with the door open while your family is eating it is time to take the cage away. Tell the dog to lay down in the other room when it is time to eat. After every meal if the dog was good be sure to tell them "Good boy/girl" and pet them.

  5. Step 5

By now your dog will virtually ignore the fact there is food nearby. If you are lucky the dog will go lay down in the other room when they see it is dinner time for the family, even without commands from their master.

  6. Step 6

It is important to communicate with the family that the dog is to recieve no human food of any kind. You cannot give in and say "Oh I'll throw him/her some popcorn just this once". Thats a good way to ruin a dog's obedience and all the hard work you put in. When you are eating snacks on the couch make sure the dog is not staring at the food. If you notice the dog staring its a good idea to put the dog in a cage that isn't in the same area until you are finished.

  7. Step 7

If you drop food around the house be sure to pick it up otherwise the dog will find it.

  8. Step 8

Let house guests know to please not feed the dog any food, it should not be considered rude, its your house and your dog. Who wants a dog that snatches food out of people's hands or off their plates anyway? Its embarassing and a lot of people find it very annoying.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be consistent and don't give up! Stick with it and I promise you will see results.
  • Always use a strong firm voice when letting your dog no he/she is doing something wrong.
