Installing a ceiling fan in place of an existing ceiling light can provide extra ventilation and a new look to the room. The reader should have some basic assembly and electrical skills to successfully complete the project.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Remodel electrical box rated for ceiling fan installation
  • hammer
  • prybar
  • drill
  1. Step 1

Ensure power is off to the ceiling light by taping the wall switch into the off position. For additional safety, turn the circuit breaker off at the electrical panel.

  2. Step 2

Remove the existing ceiling light, being careful not to harm the electrical wires as these will be reused in the new installation.

  3. Step 3

Use the hammer and prybar to remove the existing junction or j-box from the ceiling. If you can see that the j-box is screwed into the joist instead of nailed, use a screwdriver or drill to remove.

  4. Step 4

Install the new fan rated remodel j-box according to manufacturer's instructions ensuring that the electrical wires are pulled into the new box.

  5. Step 5

Assemble and install the new ceiling fan according to manufacturer's instructions.

  6. Step 6

Restore power to the new fan.
