Step 1
Try it on! Make sure the backpack fits. Usually the sizes are determined by your dog's weight, though every dog is shaped differently so you should really come into the pet store and have him try it on before you buy it. Make sure all of the straps are adjusted properly. I highly recommend backpacks with padded straps. The color is completely up to you! What looks best on him? What does he seem most comfortable in? You be the judge.

Step 2
Ready for the hike? Be careful to not put too much weight into his backpack! Most dogs can only carry about 25% of their body weight. Some breeds, however, like Alaskan Malamutes, can carry about 30% of their weight. Make sure the weight is equally distributed on both sides - if it's not equally balanced your dog will have trouble walking in a straight line! Also make sure most of the weight is on a dog's shoulders. Don't buy a backpack if all of the weight lays on their spine.
-
Step 3
If your dog has shorter fur, get a backpack with some padding. Some backpacks rub on their skin and can irritate them. Also take into consideration the length of the hike, the difficulty level, and the weather. Your dog might benefit from less weight and a more breathable backpack.

on 2/4/2009 Great article, once my puppy gets a little bigger, might get her one too, though I wonder what I need to put inside to get her to wear it :)
