Step 1
Treat fleas on your pet. The easiest thing to do is go to your vet and get a little pill called Capstar. It kills fleas for 24 hrs, giving you a whole day to treat your house and yard.
-
Step 2
Kill the fleas inside. Treat pet bedding and all carpeting. Sometimes the easiest thing to do is use a fogger, but make sure you read the instructions carefully. If you use a fogger, wash your bedding afterwards. You can try dusts and various other products.
-
Step 3
Vacuum inside!! Products kill adult fleas, but the eggs can live in your carpet for a long, long time just waiting to hatch.
-
Step 4
Treat your yard! There are numerous yard sprays on the market. But make sure you treat your yard or you'll get them back inside!
-
Step 5
Put pet on flea preventative. There are a lot of products on the market that you can apply directly to your pet. There's a shot for cats that will kill fleas for a few months. For dogs, if you can afford Sentinel, it's great because it has a flea pill in it. It doesn't actually kill the adult fleas, but any flea that bites the dog then reproduces will have babies that don't grow their egg beak so they can't hatch.
-
Step 6
If you take your pet anywhere with a possible flea infestation, keep flea products on hand such as Adam's Flea and tick spray, and spray them again before they get in your car and in your house.
