Things You'll Need:
- Vector Art Program: Freehand, Illustrator, Corel Draw, InDesign

Step 1
Design for shape first. The first thing the human eye notices is shape. Not the name, not colors...shape. That being the case, begin designing your logos without color. Always let your design sit over night at least once and look at it again with fresh eyes. You're bound to find something obvious and glaring if you do. Show your designs to friends and family and people in your field to see which shape they like best.
-
Step 2
Design for color next.Once you have narrowed down a good shape to your logo, begin experimenting with colors. Color is the second thing the human eye notices when viewing a logo or any other graphic. Choosing color is vital to separating yourself from the competition. Do your homework and find out what colors are used by leaders in your field. If there are several blues, try using a burgundy or a green. If all the others have two-tone logos, try using three or four to make yourself appear more vibrant.
-
Step 3
Design your name or message last.Lastly, the human eye will actually read the text or fonts in your logo. Work with a font that speaks about your product and to your target market at the same time. For instance, if you're product is very new and trendy, and you sell to a younger crowd, maybe try using a grungy or distorted look to your font. If, however, you are selling something old-fashioned to those who may be old-fashioned themselves, use a font that was made several years ago such as Garamond (one of the oldest fonts still in use today).
Feel free to go back to changing the shape or color as your experiment with text. Some fonts simply may not work with your shapes or colors. There must be harmony in your logo, a sense of flow and belonging.
One can therefore conclude that the actual name of your company is not as important as the shape or color of it's logo. Take for instance, Coca-Cola. They have the most recognizable symbol in the world above the Christian cross or the statue of Budha. It's the outline of their bottle. No text or color needed, just the silhouette.
