Relax and Breathe

People are constantly on the go and everyone has a certain amount of stress in their lives. We have work, school, kids, obligations to family and friends, and numerous other activities and duties to attend to. Being so busy means that sometimes we do not remember to breathe as deeply as we need to in order to fully oxygenate our bodies and brains, and reduce our level of stress.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Think about how you are breathing right now, as you read this article. Do you find yourself momentarily holding your breath unconsciously? Is your breathing shallow? Do you take quick breaths? If your breathing matches any of these criteria then you are normal. People who are stressed out by their daily lives do not breathe as deeply as they need to, and are not reducing their stress like they could if they were breathing more efficiently.

  2. Step 2

Take several deep breaths as you read this step. Slowly fill your lungs to capacity, and exhale all the air out completely. Keep breathing deeply until you have taken several deep breaths.

  3. Step 3

Choose a time everyday when you consciously think about your breathing, and take time to breathe consciously and deeply. You may want to do this while you are brushing your hair in the morning, driving in the car, on your lunch break, or while you are making dinner. Choose a time of day that you will remember, and when that time comes, take deep breathes. Your body will relax and you will reduce your level of stress. Now breathe.
