Improve your home bartender skills by learning how to use a cocktail shaker. The cocktail shaker not only helps you combine the drink ingredients, but also helps you chill it since the cocktail shaker mixes it with ice.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose the type of cocktail shaker that’s the easiest to use. Bartenders use a Boston cocktail shaker that features a mixing glass and stainless steel tumbler. For ease of use and convenience, you can also choose a three-part stainless steel cocktail shaker that includes a strainer and small cap.

  2. Step 2

Fill the cocktail shaker tumbler with ice and the ingredients of your cocktail like include liquor, fruit juice, mixers or chunks of fruit.

  3. Step 3

Cover the cocktail shaker securely. If you’re using a Boston cocktail shaker, place the glass mixing cup on top to form a tight seal. If you’re using an all-stainless steel cocktail shaker, place the lid and cap on top.

  4. Step 4

Shake the cocktail in a vigorous motion, counting to fifteen. If you’re mixing a drink with thicker and heavier liqueurs or mixers, shake the cocktail shaker longer to allow the ingredients to combine and chill inside the cocktail shaker.

  5. Step 5

Strain the cocktail into a glass. When using a Boston cocktail shaker, hold a Hawthorn strainer over the top, allowing the strainer’s coil to catch the ice cubes. If you’re using the all-stainless cocktail shaker, remove the cap and pour the drink out through the built-in strainer.
