Are you tired of going to the quicky lube and shelling out $20 - $50 for a simple oil change. Did you know that changing oil is very easy if you don’t mind getting a little dirty.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Quarts of oil
  • Oil filter
  • Oil drain pan
  • Socket set or wrenches
  • Empty milk jug
  • Rags
  • Kitty litter

The very first thing to do is buy the correct type of oil, oil filter and oil drain pan for your car. Check your owner’s manual for this information.

  2. Step 2

Locate the oil drain plug. This is usually underneath the car near the engine. You may need to jack the car up in order to get access to the plug. Slide your oil pan underneath the oil drain plug and using a socket wrench, unscrew the drain plug. Position the oil drain pan so that it will catch the oil when it comes out. This will get a little messy. If you spill some oil onto the ground throw some kitty litter on it to absorb the spill. Let the oil drain completely and screw the drain plug back in.

  3. Step 3
    Oil filter

Now it is time to change the oil filter. Locate your oil filter and unscrew it with your hands. If you are unable to unscrew it with your hands use an oil filter wrench. Now that the old oil filter is off recycle it properly. Now take the new oil filter and rub just a little bit of new oil around the rubber gasket, then screw it back on to the engine where the old filter was.

  4. Step 4

Unscrew the oil cap located on top of your engine and using your funnel, add the correct amount of oil to your engine. You can find the correct quantity in the owner’s manual. Then just screw the oil cap back on and that’s it, now you know how to change oil.
