Every basketball practice should start with warmups. When done properly, these will increase the blood flow and oxygenation of the body to prepare players for the rigors of a practice session. Here is a good warmup drill that should be done even before stretching exercises, as the increased blood flow will make the stretching more effective. This simple two-person passing drill should be done at half-speed and is intended to warm the body up and get player communication flowing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • At least 2 players
  • One basketball for every 2 players
  • Basketball court
  1. Step 1

    Each player gets a partner.

  2. Step 2

Partners line up in one corner of the court behind the baseline. They should be about 12 to 15 feet apart with one player holding the ball.

  3. Step 3

The drill begins with the first partners. The player without the ball calls out the name of the player with the ball.

  4. Step 4

The player with the ball throws a chest pass to his/her partner.

  5. Step 5

After the pass is caught, both players proceed up the court while calling out each other's names to receive the next pass. Remember, this is a warmup, so it should be done at about half-speed focusing on getting all body parts moving.

  6. Step 6

Once the partners ahead of you get past the free throw line, the next partners start.

  7. Step 7

The communication and chest passing continues all the way up the court, around the basket and back down the court.

  8. Step 8

When the players have completed the chest passes up and down the court, they will execute bounce passes in the same manner.

  9. Step 9

Finally, when the players have completed the bounce passes up and down the court, they will execute overhead passes in the same manner.

Tips & Warnings
  • Focus on proper passing form.
  • Because the players are on the move, the pass is thrown to where their partner is going.
  • Have some fun with this drill--instead of just calling out the name of the passer, call out goofy nicknames or try to get the other player to laugh--this will help loosen everyone up and get the blood flowing.
