Things You'll Need:
- savings account
- store discount cards
- coupons
- online checking account
-
Step 1
Bottles and cans: If you live in a state where a bottle deposit exists and drink soda, beer, wine or liquor then you have a source for savings. Save up your bottles and cans and return larger amounts at once. When you return them place that amount in your savings account.
-
Step 2
When you grocery shop use coupons and store discount cards. Take the total amount saved each week and deposit it into your savings account. This can add up very quickly and it's an easy way to save money.
Stop buying the newspaper and start reading it online. I save $20 per month doing this. Deposit that amount in your savings each month.
If you normally buy a coffee each morning on the way to work, try making coffee at home, putting it in a travel mug and save on average $7.50 per week. Place this amount in your savings account each week.
If you normally buy lunch each day at work, bring lunch from home. Sandwiches, soup, salads and leftover casseroles are easy to pack and will save you on average $25. per week. -
Step 3
Loose change adds up rapidly. Place a container in a convenient location and each day put your loose change in it. We average around $750 a year.
Do family members give you cash for birthdays, anniversary's and holidays? I deposited $700 this year in savings from these events.
Pay your bills online. We save a book of stamps each month by paying all of our bills including utilities online.
Do you have a lot of items that are still good but you don't need any more? Place them on Craigs List. Listings are free and the cash adds up fast.
Car pool or ride the bus rather than driving your own vehicle. Splitting the cost of gas or paying a bus fare will save you a lot over the course of a year. It also saves wear and maintenance on your vehicle. Place this into savings as well.
Unplug appliances that use a lot of energy that you don't really need. I unplugged a chest freezer and reduced my electric bill by $20 per month which goes into savings.
