Here, you will learn how to spice a sauerkraut made in your home kitchen. It will make your special sauerkraut even more exciting than it already is!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • ingredients to make homemade sauerkraut (shredded cabbage, salt, jar, wooden spoon, weight)
  • your favorite seeds, including cumin, caraway, coriander, hot pepper or celery seeds, AND/OR
  • dill, garlic, jalapeno peppers, or other flavor-lending foods.
  1. Step 1

Assemble the seeds, herbs or vegetables you wish to use to flavor your sauerkraut. This may include any of the above suggested ingredients on the supplies list above, or something else you dream up to add in there. Mixing and matching is a fun way to keep things lively; selecting just one or two flavors in significant amounts can create a signature style.

  2. Step 2

Begin to make your sauerkraut, but add in some of the "special" ingredients before you add more cabbage between poundings. (You can also mix the additional goodies in to the cabbage before pounding it in the jar.)

  3. Step 3

Let your gourmet sauerkraut finish as usual. When finished, transfer it to a pretty jar and affix a homemade label with the variety of sauerkraut contained within.

Tips & Warnings
  • You need to look up a real sauerkraut recipe before trying this. This article doesn't include the basics of the joy of sauerkraut making, but rather, how to "spice it up" a bit.
