Swap Seeds for Free

You can swap, or trade, seeds for free. Every seasoned gardener knows the benefit to saving seeds is to encourage desired characteristics from your plants. If you are accustom to saving the seeds from your biggest and best tomatoes, your earliest cucumbers, or your brightest flower blooms, swapping seeds can be the next step to further improve your garden and obtain free seeds. Swapping seeds with other gardeners can save you money and add variety and new characteristics to your own heirloom seeds. Make sure you label your seeds well with their variety and characteristics as a courtesy to other gardeners, so that they may see the traits they are getting from your seeds.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Fliers: Hang up fliers in your local grocery store and other businesses to let people know you are interested in swapping seeds for free. Include your name and telephone number and something about the seeds you have available to swap. Also, include information about the seeds you are interested in receiving.

  2. Step 2

Check with Neighbors: Look around your neighborhood to see whom else is gardening. If some of your neighbors are gardeners, take them your seeds from last season and make an offer to swap. Make sure your seeds are labeled before you approach your neighbors, so they can easily identify the seeds you have available.

  3. Step 3

Online: There are a number of seed swap communities online. Each of these can provide valuable resources for free seeds. There are links to the best seed swapping websites in the resource section below.
