Tired of all your tops shrinking into belly shirts? Try these simple steps to prevent your clothes from shrinking more and more each time you wash them.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plastic clothes hangers
  1. Step 1

Determine what fibers your clothing is made out of. You can almost always find this information on the tag where it says size, as well as directions on how to wash that particular garment. Anything cotton will shrink a bit, and if it's 100% cotton, there will definately be some degree of shrinkage, unless the label says your garment is pre-shrunk.

  2. Step 2

It is best to follow the cleaning instructions provided by the manufacturer on the label for the temperature and setting your item should be washed on. So go ahead and put it in the washer, but don't use the dryer yet!

  3. Step 3

Once your clothes have been washed, take them out of the washer and hang them on plastic clothes hangers. Plastic is best because metal can cause the shoulders to stretch out of shape. Hang them from whatever you want, the shower rod in the bathroom, your closet, the back of a chair - just make sure there are several inches of space between each article of clothing so that the air can dry so they won't smell like mildew. And if you're drying them in your closet, leave the door open!

  4. Step 4

As your clothes dry, tug on the bottom GENTLY to lengthen them, as most shrinkage occurs lengthwise rather than widthwise. Repeat this step several times until your clothes are completely dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Heat is the main cause of shrunken clothing, which is why fabrics such as cotton, which shrink easily, should not be put in the dryer.
  • Your clothes may also shrink if you do not wash them according to the manufacturer's instructions
  • If you have a very expensive item, it is worth it to pay to have it drycleaned
