The dangers of the Internet are ever-growing and protecting children from its vices has become a very important issue facing parents. Access to adult-oriented or violent material is only a few clicks away, even if a child is not specifically searching for it. There a some simple steps a parent can take to lower or eliminate the possibilty that their child can view pornographic or other unwanted content.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a computer user account for each child in your family. The child will have to log in and out of the computer each time he uses it. Each account can then be monitored separately. To create an account on a computer running Windows, open the start menu at the bottom left of the screen. Type "User Accounts" in the search program and files field. Select "Add User Account." Create a user name, select "standard account" and create a password for the account. Use the child's name as the user name. Give the password to that child only.

Go back to the start menu and type in "Parental Controls" and select that option. Select the account you want to set the parental controls for. On the parental controls screen Select "On, enforce current settings." You can then set specific sites that are allowed or blocked, and set the days, time periods, and amount of time each child can be logged in to use the computer. After configuring the parental control settings, save the settings.

Set up a user account on a Mac computer. Create a user account for each child in the family. From the Mac menu select "System Preferences" then "Accounts." Create the account, choose the desired limits on site restrictions and set other preferences. By setting up a user account and using the parental controls, you will lower the possibility of your child viewing adult-oriented or violent material.

Purchase anti-virus software. Anti-virus software providers continually update the malicious sites list and block your computer from accessing them. To block violent and adult material, be thorough when selecting the settings during and after the software installation.

    • 4

Buy or download additional parental monitoring software. Use the software in conjunction with the parental controls that your computer already provides. The software will provide an additional layer of protection against violent or pornographic sites. Some software can be found free of charge as a public service download or you can purchase a hard copy to install on the computer.
