There are lots of things to do in Austin Texas that are free. Here are some fun free things to do in Austin.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check out the local parks and outdoor attractions. Austin Texas is known as the Live Music capitol of the world but there are lots of other things to do that cost nothing. One fun thing to do is visit Zilker Park. Located along the shores of Lady Bird lake, Zilker Park has miles of jogging and bike trails to enjoy. During summer there are free blues concerts every other Wednesday and free performances in the hillside theater next to Barton Springs.

  2. Step 2

Get out and about on a bike or by hiking. Near Zilker Park is the Barton Creek greenbelt. Here you will find some good hiking and mountain bike trails that follow along limestone cliffs and a running stream. For a car trip you can visit Mount Bonnell Park for a great view of the city. Take Mount Bonnell Drive off of RM-2222.

  3. Step 3

Visit the State Capitol building. The State Capitol is free to visit and you may even be able to visit the Senate or House chambers when they are not in session. It is located at the north end of Congress Avenue. The author O'Henry lived in Austin for a while. You can visit the O'Henry home and museum for free. The Lyndon Baines Johnson library and museum is free as well.

  4. Step 4

See a bat flight. During the summer you can see on the of largest bat flights in the United States under the Congress Street Bridge. Thousands of Mexican freetail bats leave their home under the bridge each night, darkening the evening sky. Arrive just before sunset, and bring a blanket to lie on. Just don't shine any lights at the bats since this blinds them.
Another fun free thing to do in Austin Texas is to visit a museum. The Austin Children's museum and the Austin Nature Center offer free admission.
