Step 1
Before your baby is born, buy a tube of Lanolin. You will find this in any department store with other breastfeeding supplies. This will be your best friend in the coming weeks! Lanolin will help coat your sore nipples, soothe the irritation while your breasts are getting used to breastfeeding, and condition the skin. Plus, it is safe for the breastfeeding mother and baby.
-
Step 2
Before the birth, check for allergies to Lanolin by placing a small dab on the inside of your wrist a few times to see if any redness appears. Allergies to Lanolin are fairly rare, but they do happen. If you do develop an allergic reaction, consult with your doctor for an alternative to use on sore nipples while breastfeeding.
-
Step 3
From the very first feeding, when baby has finished, coat your nipples with Lanolin. You will not be using soap on your nipples for the first few weeks of breastfeeding, as your body's best defense against sore nipples is it's own natural oils. Only wash with clear water. Lanolin can help prevent sore nipples, but if you still develop some irritation, a bag of ice placed on your sore nipples and some Tylenol can help alleviate the pain.
-
Step 4
You will find your sore nipples getting better within the first week or two of breastfeeding as they toughen up. Plus, as your baby gets older, he will feed less often, reducing the amount of time your skin is being put through the wringer. Use Lanolin as long as you feel any discomfort from breastfeeding.
