Money is tight, but that doesn't make having age appropriate children's books any less important. You can easily build a cheap children's books library to ensure your child's love of reading for pennies on the dollar. Learn how.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Little bit of cash.
  1. Step 1

THRIFT STORES. While cheap children's books have gone up in price, even at your local thrift store, don't think those prices are set in stone. You can save a bundle by talking to the manager about buying in bulk. Many thrift store, especially charitable ones, are overflowing with books they never find space on the shelf for. Speak to the manager about getting a special deal to buy a large quantity of books for your child's library.

  2. Step 2

ONLINE AUCTIONS. Another great way to stock your children's library is to look for online auctions. Mothers of children who have outgrown board books and pop-ups often list their child's library in lots. These lots sell at extremely discounted prices and the books are generally in near-new condition. Even better, because they are books, shipping costs will be minimal.

  3. Step 3

JOIN A BOOK CLUB. Book clubs are a great way to stock up on the classics without going broke. Scholastic is just one of many companies that offer high quality, new children's books at a great discount on the condition that you buy in bulk over time. You can find cheap children's books available through various programs online. Sign up and take advantage of special offers.

  4. Step 4

YARD SALES. Cheap children's books are easily found at yard sales, but be sure to look the books over thoroughly. While your children may not complain about crayon marked pages, they may learn a bad lesson about how books should be treated. You don't want to build a library of books your child could easily mistake for coloring books.

  5. Step 5

LIBRARY SALES. These sales offer a wide variety of used children's books, but beware of pricing. The library intends to reinvest the sale's proceeds, so it is not always the best place to get a great deal on used children's books. However, if you are looking specifically for classics or politically correct books, you'll find them in abundance at your local library book sale.

  6. Step 6

SECOND HAND SHOPS. These are different from thrift shops. These books are usually purchased with resale in mind, so don't be stunned if the price reflects a mark-up. However, because these used children's books are more expensive than those found at a thrift store, you can be sure the condition of the books will be superior.
