Things You'll Need:
- Matches
- Charcoal
- Starter fluid
- Lanterns
- Battery radio
- Batteries
-
Step 1
CharcoalHaving the basic necessities on hand during a disaster can mean all the difference between being moderately comfortable and being miserable. When you see things on sale that you know may be needed for a power outage or a disaster..stock it up. For instance, recently i saw charcoal on sale at Brookshires for $3.00. Grab those bags, and store them away. Sure, you are going to use some of it, but buy enough to have a sufficient quantity on hand in case of an emergency.
-
Step 2
TunaMany people will go to a shelter in times of disasters, but..think for an instant. What if all those shelters are full? How can you be prepared to provide for you and your family? Take cans of food for instance. You will of course, want to buy the type of food that you and your family will eat. So if you like Tuna, stock up several cans a month, or when you see them go on sale..don't ignore it, thinking a disaster won't happen to you. It can.
-
Step 3
Bottled WaterBuy bottled water by the case. Don't worry, it stays good for quite a long time. If you see it is going to sit there longer than necessary, then start using that water, but don't forget to replace it with freshly bought water as you use it up. Sometimes water is not readily available during an emergency, so be safe, and keep it on hand.
-
Step 4
CokeKeep sodas on hand. There is nothing quite like having a soda, when you just really want something to drink. They are also good for upset stomach.
-
Step 5
LanternKeep candles, matches, and lanterns stocked as a basic necessity. Don't forget the lantern oil. You will be surprised at how much lantern oil you cannot find when you need it the most. We had to drive 100 miles to get lantern oil from my sister after our last hurricane.

on 1/23/2009 I noticed the batteries for the radio on your list. This is a good point. Many people are so engaged with other technologies that they might not realize how valuable a regular radio (or batteries) could be in an emergency. Thanks. :-)
