When unnecessary files build up on the hard drive over time, it can take up disk space. Therefore, it's important to perform a disk clean up often; at least once weekly, to clean out the hard drive of any unused files that are taking up disk space. This is a great way to free up some memory on the hard drive.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows XP, 98, ME and 2000 operating system
  1. Step 1
    From the start up menu

    To perform a disk clean up first click on the "Start" menu, then go to "All programs." From "All Programs" scroll up to "Accessories" and and click on it. Then click on "system tool" and select "Disk Cleanup."

  2. Step 2
     

    Select the drive you want to clean out and then click on "Ok." After the computer is done scanning you can choose to review the file first or just click on "Ok."

  3. Step 3
     

    Repeat this process for each drive you want to clean on the hard drive.

  4. Step 4
     

    A disk cleanup can also be performed by clicking on "My computer." Then right click on "Local disk C." From the pop up window, under the "General" tab, scroll down and click on "Properties" from the drop down menu. Then click on "Disk cleanup."

  5. Step 5

    Then repeat step 2 above.
