Making your own homemade chocolates for your valentine on Valentine’s Day can be an extra sweet gesture. Making chocolates yourself is fun, inexpensive, and more meaningful to your loved one.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • chocolate chips
  • molds
  • candy, nuts, raisins
  • spoon
  • straight edge
  1. Step 1

Buy the chocolate of your choice. Chocolate chips are going to be easier to work with than a block of chocolate. You can also get different types of chips at the grocery store: milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, peanut butter, butterscotch, mint, etc.

  2. Step 2

Purchase Valentine’s Day style candy molds, such as hearts or roses. Silicone molds are ideal because they are very flexible, which makes it easier to remove your chocolates when they cool. Molds can be found at craft stores, box stores, and online.

  3. Step 3

Put some chips in a microwave safe bowl and melt the chips one minute at a time, stirring in between. You do not want to overheat or burn the chocolate.

  4. Step 4

Spoon the chocolate into your molds, so they are partially full. Sprinkle in candies, such as crushed heath bar or crushed candy-canes, raisins, flaked coconut, maraschino cherries, nuts, etc. Fill the molds the rest of the way with chocolate. You can also let the first layer of chocolate cool, and then fill the molds the rest of the way with a different type of chocolate. Get creative.

  5. Step 5

Tap the molds to release any air bubbles in your chocolates, and scrap off the excess chocolate with a knife or plastic ruler. Any straight edge should work.

  6. Step 6

Let your chocolates cool. This may take a while, so be patient.

  7. Step 7

When your Valentine’s Day chocolates have cooled completely, turn your mold upside-down and release them onto a clean surface, such as a cookie sheet, tin foil, or cutting board.

  8. Step 8

Do not touch your chocolates until they are room temperature, or you will leave fingerprints on them and mar their glossy surfaces.
