Is your ceiling boring? To cut costs, builders usually neglect this part of the house. But you can easily perk up the ceiling by adding architectural interest. Try these suggestions to give some spark to the top of your room.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Showcase your ceiling with a paintable ceiling medallion. The Victorians used these all the time as decorative accents, and they're back in style. They're now made of lightweight materials and are easy to paint and isntall. You can paint them the same color as your ceiling or give them an antique paint finish to highlight the patterns.

  2. Step 2

Draw the eye up and cool your room at the same time. Ceiling fans are fairly simple to install, and they can really cool a room during the warmer months. You can find them at hardware stores in all sizes and colors. How about one for your screen porch? You can get a ceiling fam with blades that look like gaint palm leaves.

  3. Step 3

Add molding. This is a timeless way of adding architectural interest to your ceiling. Crown molding can be as simple or as ornate as you like. Most hardware stores will cut it to your specifications. You can paint it the same color as your ceiling or as your walls.

  4. Step 4

Install a laminate wood ceiling. You can buy tongue and groove laminate planks, cut the right length with a miter saw and lay them just as you would lay a floor. Stagger the ends for a more professional finish.

  5. Step 5

Light up your life, and your ceiling, with recessed lighting. If you have wooden beams, why not install the light right in the beams? The light will draw the eye up to admire your lovely beams.

  6. Step 6

Copy the past with tin ceilings. They're popular once more. A tin ceiling will give your room instant vintage character.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't always stick with white ceiling paint. It's okay to give the ceiling color.
