Who wouldn't want to make a Snow White costume? Prince Charming can wait since we'd have the seven dwarfs to help with everything. Who cares if they're Sleepy or Grumpy? You've still got five, that's not so Grimm (yes, those brothers who wrote Snow White, too). Read on to make an adult Halloween costume.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yellow Satin Prom Dress - Strapless
  • Red Sequins Trim - 1/2" Wide
  • Red Satin Ribbons - 1" Wide
  • Red Chiffon for Cape
  • Blue Satin Ribbon - 2" Wide

BUY A YELLOW PROM DRESS. Check out thrift stores or online prom dress websites. Look for a full-length strapless gown. Satin is ideal, but do your best.

  2. Step 2

ADD BLUE RIBBONS TO THE BODICE. Place strips of the blue ribbon over the bodice next to each other. It will be easiest to make a six inch section down the center front and a six to 8 inch section down the back. If you use stretch ribbon, you'll be able to cover over the bust, too. Pin the ribbons and whip stitch by hand. Use the red stretch sequins to cover the joins of the ribbon.

  3. Step 3

MAKE THE SLEEVES. Add blue straps using the blue satin ribbon. Cut 3 to 4 strips of the red ribbon for each short sleeve. Attach them to the outer edge of the blue straps at the top of the shoulder. They're going to hang loose. Yes, this is a sexier Snow White.

  4. Step 4

MAKE THE CAPE. Cut out a quarter circle in the red chiffon. The radius should be 8" longer than your fingertips. Cut out a pie shape wedge at the top. Determine the pie depth by measuring the distance between the dress straps in back. See sketch. Do a rolled hem all around the edges or have it sewn for you. Sew the cape to one strap at the top of the shoulder. Hand sew the other side after the dress is on or add hooks and eyes.

  5. Step 5

ADVANCED SLEEVES. If you have the skill, you can always buy some blue satin and attach real sleeves. Apply red satin marquis shapes to the sleeves for the traditional Snow White costume.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use lightweight fabrics for the cape or the weight will distort the shape.
  • The truth be told, Snow White actually became the dwarfs' housekeeper, but all the woodland animals and birds did the dirty work.
  • This how-to article does not include the white collar. That's getting pretty advanced in the sewing world. Patterns are out there to help you.
