A lack of defending forecheckers is the key in switching from a breakout play up the boards to one up the center.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Ensure that your defender has received control of the puck in the corner.

  2. Step 2

Skate the defenseman toward the net, and note how closely the forechecker is pursuing.

  3. Step 3

Note that the defense carrier moves into center ice. The other team may now enter a defensive stance and open passing lanes.

  4. Step 4

Have your defender pass to the center.

  5. Step 5

Instruct the center to pass to a breaking wing, who moves into the neutral zone and toward the goal.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the passing lane is open, have your defense make a longer pass to a wing in the neutral zone. You may risk an interception, but bypassing the center, you may catch the defense by surprise. Besides, your wing has already gained speed for a nice conversion.
  • Your defense must make short and accurate passes to the wings or risk losing the puck in front of the net - ripe for a forechecker to convert into a goal.
  • If the forechecker is close behind when your defense first gains control of the puck, do not run through the center. Switch to a breakout play up the boards.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.
