Step 1
Decide when to apply. You can start applying for Social Security retirement benefits at age 62, or you can wait until your full retirement age, which is somewhere between age 65-67. You can also wait for later if you elect to and earn credits.

Follow the links to apply for Social Security online. Fill out the application accurately. Save your information along the way in case you're interrupted. When you have finished, add your electronic "signature" as requested in the form.

Submit any supplemental documentation in hard copy to a Social Security office.
