Having a sick pet is very distressing. Since our dogs cannot communicate verbally about how they are feeling, it is important for us to look for physical clues. Here's how to know if your dog is sick.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Veterinarian
  1. Step 1

If you dog suddenly has lost his or her appetite for more than two meals, you know there is something wrong. Sometimes its just depression or loneliness but loss of appetite is generally a good sign your dog is not well.

  2. Step 2

If your dog is lethargic, you know you have a problem. Typically dogs will get excited when you come home or leave the house. If your dog barely lifts his or her head to greet you, you probably have a sick dog on your hands. Some dogs are just lazy and that's the way they are but if your dog normally goes nuts to see you, you know you have a sick dog on your hands.

  3. Step 3

If your dog suddenly starts drinking a lot of water and can't get enough, you know you have sick dog. Call the doctor immediately. This could be a sign of a serious problem. Unless of course you did a serious no-no and gave your pal some salty table food like a Christmas ham...then you have your explanation about why he or she is so thirsty.

  4. Step 4

If your dog is falling and can't stand up, you have a problem. Sometimes its arthritis but look out for signs of accidental poisoning. If you suspect poisoning, seek medical attention immediately! A poisoned dog may fall down, have dilated pupils and be drooling.

  5. Step 5

If your dog is coughing or has a fever, you know your dog is sick. If your dog has a fever, contact your vet. If your dog continues to cough for three days, seek medical advice from your vet.

  6. Step 6

It is a really good idea to invest in a book about your canine breed for helpful hints about illnesses and diseases that your pet is prone to getting. For example, some dogs are more likely to go blind from cataracts than others and some are more likely to develop kidney infections. These things are always good to know so that you know what to look for and how to prevent them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Poisoning does happen even when you don't see it happen. Be sure to get this dog to the canine emergency room A.S.A.P.
