No one knows exactly how much time we have here with each other. However, there are many things that we can do or not do to increase our chances of living a long life.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY - Eating healthy and getting regular exercise significantly reduces your chance of dying from a preventable disease or accident. Learn what foods are good for your heart and internal organs so that your body can combat anything that may attack it.

  2. Step 2

DON'T DRINK TOO MUCH - Small amounts of alcohol once or twice a week is acceptable. By small amount I mean 1 or 2 drinks. Drinking more than that can be dangerous. Not only do you have long term damage from drinking, but you also have short term damage from accidents, bar fights, and just being an idiot diseases you can get while drunk. Not to mention you can kill yourself just by drinking too much one time! Weekend warriors who drink heavily only on the weekends put themselves at more risk than the average alcoholic every day drinker. The yo-yo effect of heavy drinking and then not drinking is very destructive to your body. Stop drinking immediately, get medical help if you need it. You have the power to not drink inside yourself right now.

  3. Step 3

DON'T SMOKE - I make it sound so easy don't I. If you are a smoker, see an article on how to quit below under resources. Quit today. The sooner you quit, the sooner your lungs can repair themselves.

  4. Step 4

VISIT A DOCTOR - Regular medical check ups, and I mean at least once a year, can find problems earlier and keep you healthier. If you have been dragging your feet, now is the time to just make the appointment and show up. Your family is counting on you to keep yourself alive and healthy so just do it!

  5. Step 5

DENTAL HEALTH - Problems in your mouth cause problems with your body. Maintain good dental health by brushing at least twice a day, flossing once a day and seeing a dentist regularly (every six months) for a cleaning and exam.

  6. Step 6

GOOD MENTAL HEALTH - You need to be able to make good decisions for yourself. Keep your mind clear by not allowing things to bother you. Do not cloud your brain by using illegal drugs.

on 1/16/2009 Dying isn't my thing, so I'm happy to announce that I look to be on the right track. Except the flossing. I need to work on that.

on 1/16/2009 Good article, I think dental health is often overlooked...dental should be part of regular medical insurance! Thanks for the article. :-)
