How to Inexpensively Turn Old Furniture into New
You can use black spray paint to turn old furniture into new as an easy and inexpensive way to create a cohesive room. Most brands of spray paint come in either matte or glossy finishes, so choose the one that suites your decor. Purchase enough cans of paint to finish your project; one can can cover a small end table and a framed mirror, a headboard, or two side chairs, but a large bookcase will probably require at least two cans. Most spray paint for indoor use is $5, so a $50 to 100 remodeling budget goes a long way!
Things You'll Need
- Black spray paint
- Outdated or scuffed furniture (not antiques!)
- Painter's masking tape
- Tarp or plastic sheeting

1
Gather the furniture you'd like to update and find a suitable space for spray painting. Lay down enough plastic tarp or newspapers to fit the furniture you're painting plus two to four feet on every side and tape it down.
-
2
Wipe down the furniture to be painted and make sure it is dry before you begin. Unless there is a heavy buildup of paint already on your furniture piece, there's no need to sand it first.

3
Mask any areas you don't want painted, such as mirrors or glass insets, with plastic and painter's tape
-
4
Spray paint the furniture with a sweeping, circular motion to avoid drips. Most items will require a second coat; make sure to allow drying time between coats.
-
5
Allow the piece to dry overnight before bringing it inside your home.

Tips & Warnings
You can pick up inexpensive shower liners at dollar stores instead of using tarps or plastic liners.
If you are prone to asthma or allergies, wear a light mask while spray painting.

Try using high heat flat black paint to paint the inside of a dirty old fireplace (after cleaning), to give it a nice uniform and elegant look. Great article! -
