Sorting mail is not my favorite job when I come home from work, especially if my toddler gets to it before I do. This article will help you establish a daily routine and system of organization to help free your life of more unnecessary clutter. It is estimated that we receive over fifty thousand pieces of mail in our lifetimes and about one third of it is junk mail. With these tips you wont have to fear the ever growing pile of envelopes in your kitchen, living room, dining room, office or the postman anymore. Remember that the mail is your friend, if you control it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • paper shredder
  1. Step 1

Get off the junk mail lists and thus decrease the amount of mail coming in by calling 1-888-5OPT OUT (1-888-567-8688)and requesting that your name be removed. This will reduce chances of identity theft by getting rid of the pre-approved credit card offers. Also log on to www.catalogchoice.org to stop unwanted catalogs from coming in through the mailbox.

  2. Step 2

Commit to dealing with the mail every day so that it does not pile up. This means setting up a work station for your mail where sorting can take place. Put a couple of bins or trays the area along with a trashcan and paper shredder. Keep a bin handy for unwanted magazines and catalogs, when it fills up throw them into the recycle bin. You might consider using a pin board or calender to help organize your schedule and upcoming commitments. Establish a good filing system and only file items that your accountant/ financial consultant deem important for tax purposes.

  3. Step 3

Keep a separate tray or bin for unpaid bills and keep handy all necessary bill paying items such as stamps, envelopes, and your checkbook. Pay as many bills as you can online. This will save you time and energy while cutting down on paper volume. Immediately shred junk mail and anything that may contain bank account information, credit card, or social security numbers to prevent identity theft.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't let yourself get overwhelmed with mail sorting, keep up with it so it doesn't become a headache.
  • Turn off and unplug your paper shredder when you are not using it if you have children in the house.
