Learn how to make the perfect baked potato, and your stomach will be grumbling for more. Do you like comfort food that really fills you up? Then get ready for the most delectable potato on Earth.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy the right kind of potato. None taste as good as the Russet, especially straight out of the oven. Gather as many medium-large Russet potatoes as you need. They should all be about the same shape and size, without sprouts or greenish discoloration. Being similar helps potatoes to cook evenly.

  2. Step 2

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Wash the potatoes and poke holes in them, then jab each one three times with a fork. This prevents them from exploding and making a huge mess. Roll the skins in butter and coarse salt next. After that, wrap aluminum foil completely around each potato.

  3. Step 3

Line them up evenly on the middle oven rack. Bake the bunch for one hour or until tender. You can tell they're done when a fork pokes through easily, or when they feel mushy. Please wear an oven mitt for the second test. Take them out when they feel ready and line them up on the stovetop.

  4. Step 4

Slice the (piping hot) potatoes open and fluff them. Spread 1tbsp. butter on each one. Sprinkle shredded medium cheddar cheese over each potato. Cheese is best grated off the block - Tillamook recommended. Bake the potatoes for 3-5 more minutes, and remove them when the cheese looks melted.

  5. Step 5

Sprinkle salt and pepper, plus 2tbsp. real bacon over every baked potato. Give them all at least 5 minutes to cool off. Then spoon out a dollop of sour cream for each one. Take the time to savor every bite instead of wolfing the whole thing down, and folks, that's how to bake a potato to perfection!

Tips & Warnings
  • Check under "resources" for more recipes.
  • Fluff potatoes by squeezing the short ends inward.
  • Wash the potatoes thoroughly before cooking them.
  • For crispy potato skins, skip rubbing butter on the outside.
