How to install fiber-cement siding.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hammer or siding nail gun
  • Chop saw or circular saw with concrete blade
  • measuring tape
  • ladders/scaffolding or pump jacks
  1. Step 1

First step is to find out how much cementitious siding you need. Measure the length times the width of the area you need. Subtract for the windows and doors or any other openings that wont have the siding installed on. Add 10% for material waste.

  2. Step 2

Wrap the house with builders paper or a Tyvek type of builders paper. Flash around windows and doors. Install all trim boards on corners and around windows.

  3. Step 3

Starting from the bottom. You will need to place a starter strip to give the bottom row a kick out. Rip a piece 1 inch and nail to bottom to provide the kick out needed. Using nails that will penitrate no less than 3/4" into the substraight. You want to make sure when nailing you hit the studs. You should nail the siding to every stud. You will also need to mark out the area top to bottom dividing the spacing evenly so that you are left with a full piece at the top and not some small cutoff that looks ugly. IF you have an area that has a seam place a piece of builders paper behind seam, about a 4"x4" piece. This will help keep out water. Also caulk seam with color matching caulk. Nail the siding at the top edge so the next row overlaps and hides the nail heads.

  4. Step 4

After working your way to the top around windows. If you have any areas that you needed to nail and the nail is exposed. You could cut a piece of trim board to cover the expose nails. Or use paint to hide , this should be available from the company you purchased the fiber cement siding.

Tips & Warnings
  • Taking your time and doing good measurements will make for a nice finished job.
  • You need a nail gun to install this type of siding. The material is just to hard to try to drive a nail into it. Yes it is possible but it would take you forever.
