How to Build a Cedar Wood Fence Door

Whether building a new fence gate or simplay repairing or re-building an existing gate, the process is fairly straightforward and inexpensive.

• fence planks or boards
• 2" x 4" lumber
• gate latch and hinges
• drill
• screws

1. Measure the opening to be gated. Translate this measurement into the number of fence planks needed. No need to be too exact at this point, just ensure that there are enough planks to at least cover the width of the opening.

2. Layout the fence planks side by side on a flat surface. Don't bother leaving any spacing or gaps between the planks, since they will naturally shrink as they age and dry out.

3. Cut the 2"x4" boards to size and lay out on the planks in a "Z" shape with the top and bottom legs of the "Z" within 8"-12" of the top and bottom of the gate.

4. Flip the entire assembly over or re-assemble with the "Z: on the ground and the planks on top. Screw the fence planks into the Z bracing.

5. The gate is now assembled. It can be cut down to the exact width needed and even shaped into an arch or any other desired shape.

6. Install the hinges and gate latch and the gate is ready to go!

Tips & Warnings

• Don't worry about getting the gate the exact size or shape until after it is assembled. It can then be cut into whatever size and shape is desired.
