If your pet has been scratching incessantly, it could be due to dry skin which may be caused by a variety of medical issues. To relieve your pet's itching, you may need to try several different medications and remedies until your pet seems to have stopped scratching and is feeling some sort of relief. Many itchy skin remedies are natural and organic so you don't have to worry about harsh medications.

Things You'll Need

  • Medicated shampoo
  • Topical ointment

Wash your pet once a week with a medicated shampoo. Look for a shampoo with hydrocortisone and oat protein. Colloidal oatmeal shampoos are available at pet stores for cats and dogs and will relieve itching with regular use.

Apply a topical liquid to instantly relieve itching on your pet. Apply a few drops of a topical liquid such as Calendula found at pet stores or health food stores. It is antibacterial and has soothing properties.

Apply a natural soothing vitamin or supplement such as Vitamin E, fish oil or tea tree oil. Vitamin E and fish oil are available in liquid form or capsules which may be opened and poured directly onto your pet's skin. Tea tree oil is available in liquid form at most health food stores.

Reduce itching from common pet allergies by changing your pet's diet, cleaning your pet's sleeping and living areas and using a high-quality flea control product.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bring your pet to the veterinarian if the itching does not subside after home treatments.
