Format a Zip Drive
Format a Zip Drive

Warning: This article designed for those who lack the computer know-how beyond CTRL+ALT+DELETE to format a zip drive.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer (desktop/laptop)
  • Zip Drive
  • USB Cable (if applicable)
  1. Step 1

After it is determined that the zip drive is either empty or the pre-existing data is not needed, connect the USB cable to the USB port (on the zip drive) and on the computer. If the computer is a desktop, there is usually a USB port located on the front of the tower. And usually on the rear right side of a laptop. (It is marked with a symbol which resembles a pitchfork)

  2. Step 2

When the connection is made between the Zip Drive and the computer, if properly connected, the computer will display a message in the toolbar (usually in the lower, right-hand corner) telling you that new hardware has been detected. Close the dialogue box and open MY COMPUTER on the START menu. There will be a menu labeled "Devices with Removable Storage". Under that menu, the zip drive will usually be designated as the (E:) drive or under certain circumstances (F:) drive.

  3. Step 3

Locate the drive where the Zip Drive is connected (an iconic picture makes this simple). When located, click once , directly on the icon. A drop menu will appear. Approximately half way down the menu, there will be an option which reads FORMAT. Click on this option and another menu will appear. Click START on this menu, sit back and allow the computer to do the rest. A dialogue box will appear, informing you that the process is complete. CONGRATULATIONS!!! You are no longer entirely computer illiterate.

Tips & Warnings
  • Formatting will erase any data that may be stored on the zip drive. If pertinent data is stored on the zip drive, it must be backed up to another medium (ie CD, flashdrice, desktop, etc.)
  • No adjustments are necessary on the format menu. The computer sets its on parameters which will perform the formatting of the removable drive.
  • Prior to removing the drive after use, double-click on the removable drive icon located in the bottom right-hand corner before disconnecting the drive. A menu will pop-up giving you the option to STOP/EJECT the drive. Select STOP/EJECT. A dialogue box will pop-up informing you that it is safe to remove the drive.
