Things You'll Need:

- Toys

Step 1
Get a crate or cage and place it on the floor in a room where people hang out most, like the family room or kitchen. Make sure it is only big enough for the puppy to stand up and turn around in. It can't be any bigger or else the pup will go to the bathroom in one part of the crate, and sleep in the other part. A dog will not go to the bathroom where it sleeps.
-
Step 2
The crate, sized down.If your crate is too big, all you need to do is put some boxes in it to take up the extra space. This is good so that you don't have to buy a bigger crate when you pup grows in size, you just some of the boxes out.
-
Step 3
Put a towel or a dog bed in the crate with a clock that ticks. Put the clock under the towel or bed so the pup can't see it, it only hears it. This sound reminds the pup of his mom's heart beat. It will help him sleep better.
-
Step 4
Leave the door open so your pup can casually walk in and out of it. You can put some dog toys inside as to entice the puppy to walk in. Once the pup is in, let him sleep or just hang out with the door open. Gradually start to close the door after the pup is comfortable being in the cage.
-
Step 5
Once the door is shut, just walk around in the room so he can see you. Later, start to leave the room for a bit. Come back and open the door. Then do it again but leave for a longer time. This lets the pup know that you will always be back to let him out.
-
Step 6
Next you want the pup to start sleep in the crate overnight. Let the pup go to the bathroom right before he goes to sleep. Once the dog is in the crate, close the door and go to bed. When you let it out in the morning, make sure to let it out to go to the bathroom, he's been holding it all night. (As I said before, it won't poop or pee where it sleeps.
