Step 1
Clean air delivery rate measures how many cubic feet of clean air the air purifier can deliver per minute. This rate is often labeled as CADR on the air purifier's packaging. A good rule of thumb is a CADR of 50 per 80 foot of space in the room you wish to use it in.
-
Step 2
Inspect the type of filter and fan the air purifier unit has. HEPA filters are the most efficient at removing allergens and other microscopic nasties floating around in your air. As for the fan, just ensure it at least has one. Many do not.
-
Step 3
Decide if you want to have electrostatic ionizers in your air purifier. The pros to them is that they charge the particles the air purifier has trapped in such a way that they are heavy enough to fall to the floor where you can easily clean them up. The con of it is you will be breathing in byproduct ozone in small amounts.
-
Step 4
Ask to have the air purifier unit plugged in and turned on so you can listen to the noise the unit emits. Some are quite quiet while others are obnoxiously loud. Make sure it's at a level you can deal with.
-
Step 5
Look for reviews online for various air purifiers. Consumer Review and Epinions are just two of many you could check out. Compare many models before making your decision. This is not a decision that should be made based on price alone or you risk being dissatisfied with your air purifier.
