This stunt defense is waged on the strong side of the offensive line. It begins as a 4-4 formation but aims at breaking the line using trickery. Like the twist, this is a good pass rush play.

  1. Step 1

Assume your defense faces a typical split-back offense (see first step of "Run a Football Offense: Quick Pitch" under Related eHows).

  2. Step 2

Position the right tackle in the gap between the center and the right guard.

  3. Step 3

Set the left tackle in the gap between the left guard and tackle.

  4. Step 4

Position the left end head-up on the tight end.

  5. Step 5

Have the right end block the outside shoulder of the offensive tackle.

  6. Step 6

Start four linebackers 3 to 4 yards behind the line, with one behind each tackle and one 3 to 4 yards to either side of the ends.

  7. Step 7

Set two corners in your defensive secondary, 7 yards off the line of scrimmage and opposite any receivers, usually the split end and flanker.

  8. Step 8

Leave a free safety 9 to 12 yards behind the line of scrimmage, between the center linebackers.

  9. Step 9

Launch the play. It will appear that the defensive left tackle should block on the outside shoulder of the guard. Instead, let him cross to the right and attempt to slip in between the guard and center. This may surprise the guard and cause him to shift toward the center.

  10. Step 10

Send the left-center linebacker racing forward as the guard is sucked inward, slipping through the resulting gap.

  11. Step 11

    Sack the quarterback.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the play is fast enough, the quarterback may not have time to avoid the rush. If he sees the stunt and shifts to the right, however, pick him up with the far right linebacker.
  • The free safety should be concentrated on the tight end, who may jet out for a quick curl pass.
