Rising fuel costs in recent years and environmental concerns have led many to search for fuel efficient cars. To help you determine the most fuel efficient car for your wallet and the planet, several areas that should be considered.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Car brochures
  • Internet
  • Motoring Magazines
  • Time
  1. Step 1

They say size does not matter, but when it comes to gas efficiency, it is a crucial consideration. The heavier your vehicle, the less fuel efficient it is. The larger the vehicle, the greater the power and bigger the engines needed to accelerate. A word of caution: some cars hide their weight well, so always be on the lookout. Sometimes a car that appears small may be concealing heavy frames or reinforced suspension components. With their extra pounds of hardware, they can be real gas guzzlers.

  2. Step 2

Find out its real miles per gallon for your use. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that any new car weighing less than 8500 pounds have its fuel efficiency, in terms of miles per gallon (MPG) shown on its windshield. In theory, the higher the figure that is displayed, the better its efficiency. But, always remember that these rates are based on a vehicle that is carrying only one person - the driver - and no cargo.

  3. Step 3

Selecting options for your vehicle may make your driving experience more pleasant or comfortable they decrease its gas efficiency. Almost every amenity increases your car’s weight, decreasing the efficiency of the engine and in turn, increases gas consumption. To keep your car’s efficiency for gas high, considering avoiding options such as: sunroof, electric windows, power locks, roof rack and air conditioning.
